Strikeforce’s Diaz vs. Cyborg event takes places tonight in San Jose, California. The card is headlined by a welterweight title fight pitting champion Nick Diaz against Evangelista ‘Cyborg’ Santos. ‘Downtown’ Dave Brown offers his quick picks for the evening’s fights.
Nick Diaz vs. Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos
Diaz’s claim to fame is his ability to punch and punch a lot. Working jabs and straights for 5 rounds could really take the wind out of Cyborg, who has shown some cardio problems in the past. The one problem for Diaz is that Cyborg can throw bombs and will not be afraid of Diaz’s solid ground game. Diaz wins by decision.
Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza vs. “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler
There is no doubt that Lawler can scrap with the best of them. He possesses top notch power striking and is not afraid to stand in and trade. Jacare’s grappling is arguably the best in MMA. His jiu-jitsu is silky smooth and he could easily catch Lawler with any number of submissions. Lawler likes to start fast, but Jacare will catch him with a 2nd round submission.
Herschel Walker vs. Scott Carson
This is probably more of a gimmick match than anything else. That being said Walker is a supremely talented athlete. The man does 1000 situps and 1000 pushups a day and that’s not even part of his training regime, he just does that for fun. Carson represents a step up in competition for the former NFLer, but Strikeforce wants Herschel to succeed and he will with a 1st round KO.
Roger Gracie vs. Trevor Prangley
A relative newcomer going up against a seasoned veteran. Gracie is a second degree blackbelt in jiu-jitsu under Carlos Gracie and has won all 3 of his MMA fights by submission. Prangley is coming off a win against Keith Jardine last fall and has only lost 1 one fight in the last few years. Gracie wins by submission in the 1st.
